Japan is a month away from the arrival of the first comet in a millennium. Mitsuha, a high school girl living in a rural town, spends her days in a state of melancholy.

One day, she dreams that she has become a boy and enjoys life in the city. Meanwhile, Taki, a high school boy living in Tokyo, also has a strange dream. He's become a high school girl in a remote mountain town he's never set foot in.

These bizarre dreams repeat, with memories and time clearly missing. The two realize they are switching places with each other. Bewildered by this recurring exchange, they gradually come to accept their strange reality.

However, just as they eventually warm up to each other, the swapping abruptly stops. Taki realizes they share a special connection and decides to go see Mitsuha.
