The 58-hectare garden that gives the film its setting — laid out as an imperial garden in 1906 on the site of a daimyo residence, opened to the public in 1949. It holds three distinct gardens (French formal, English landscape, Japanese traditional), around a thousand cherry trees of some sixty-five varieties, and the wisteria arbour and pond pavilion the film draws so closely. There is an admission charge, opening hours vary by season, and alcohol is not permitted inside.
