The Asakusa Ryounkaku Tower was a 12-story, 52-meter-tall building completed in 1890. Its name, meaning "towering over the clouds," made it a beloved tourist attraction in Asakusa.
On September 1, 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake caused the building to break and collapse from its eighth floor and above. Due to the difficulty of restoration, it was dismantled on September 23 of the same year.
In 2018, during the construction of a new building, bricks and other materials believed to be from the foundation were discovered. The developer of the building, hoping to make the site more prominent and endearing, installed a mural.
