Overview of this location
The second-floor concourse at Kyoto Station. The fourth-generation station building, completed in 1997 to Hiroshi Hara's design, is defined by an enormous atrium running north to south and a grand staircase of 171 steps. It set off a fierce argument about Kyoto's skyline; today the station is itself a sight.
