Overview of this location
The main gate of the former Toyosato Elementary School. The complex was donated in 1937 by Furukawa Tetsujiro, an Omi merchant and executive of the Marubeni trading house, who paid for it out of his own pocket, and designed by William Merrell Vories. Through the gate the white main block stands ahead, the Shutoku Memorial Hall to the left.

The separate building to the left of the main school block, built as the school's library and now holding the Toyosato tourist information desk on the ground floor and a community gallery above. Its Art Deco handrails and fittings are worth the detour on their own, and a small café opens here on Sundays serving waffles and coffee. Staff can point you to everything else in town before you set off.
