Overview of this location
One of the shrine's reclining ox statues. Michizane was born in the year of the ox, and legend has it he was buried where the ox drawing his body refused to go further — so oxen serve as the deity's messengers at Tenmangu shrines. Stroking one is said to bring wisdom, and the heads are polished bright.
